site closing

In an effort to streamline my life and stop juggling so many balls in the air, I’ve decided to close this site. It will remain up for as long as I own the domain, but I won’t be adding to it. Thanks for reading and I sincerely hope you’ve enjoyed reading, as much as I’ve enjoyed writing.

I hate people!

I hate people. This is NOT a joke! I say it almost daily at work. The problem with being a smart ass is the fact that people always think you’re kidding, even or especially when you’re not.

I realize it’s counterproductive to hate people, when I rely on them for my income, but…

It’s not me, it’s them. Honestly.

The stupid questions, actions, comments and behaviors I encounter on a daily basis are enough to push anyone over the edge. And that’s where I’m currently standing. On the edge. It’s almost like I’m a bear at the zoo, trapped in a little cage, as people poke me with sticks or throw rocks at me. The little cage is my j.o.b. and the people poking me are my ‘guests’. At times, even the management and my co-workers are guilty. You never know which time will be the one that makes me snap, you just know it’s coming and you hope like hell you’re ready for the attack.

Yep, that’s how I feel about my j.o.b. Perhaps the end has come again?!?

if it’s broke, fix it

I often heard this mantra as a child~if it’s not broke, don’t fix it. While that makes sense, wouldn’t it also make sense to fix something when it is broken? I would think so. Apparently, not everyone agrees.

As everyone should know, I’m not a fan of the service industry, or being an employee in general. There are several reasons for this, but I’m definitely not employee material. I dislike not being in charge and I absolutely despise stupid rules or things that just don’t make sense.

It doesn’t matter where I’ve worked, I’ve run into this problem. I’m sure I’m not alone.

Recently I’ve really started to butt heads with management again. This has happened because of the rules that don’t make any sense AND still aren’t changed. When I question why, I’m told to my face that they should definitely be changed. And still, nothing. So then I get pissed because everyone appears to agree with me, but still does nothing to change it. So then I complain that no one follows through on what appears to be empty promises. I’ve since learned that no one has any intention of making the changes I’ve suggested, despite agreeing with me that said changes need to take place. The reason; we’ve always done things this way and we’re not changing them now.

Well, that makes perfect sense. Never mind that my suggestion would be more fair, even, and beneficial for everyone involved, not to mention it might boost morale to follow through on your promises.

Whatever. Some days I wish we didn’t have so much technology. Life would be simpler, but…what if our ancestors had thought, yeah, we don’t need any other mode of travel, we’ve always taken the train and so we will always take the train? It’s called changing with the times. You might want to try it.

you’ll be back!

One of my friends recently gave her notice at work. While I’m happy for her, I will definitely miss working with her. Of course, it’s even more emotional for me because I wish it were me.

I’m growing increasingly frustrated, however, by the fact that every time a server puts in their notice, everyone says ‘you’ll be back!’ I dealt with it when I gave my notice also and I hate that people were right. It doesn’t matter to me that it’s temporary. I NEVER wanted to go back.

How can anyone move onto something better, when the rest of the world is telling them they can’t?!? Or when everyone is telling them they’ll miss the cash, because that always comes after telling them they’ll be back. As if serving is the only way to earn cash. ARGH!!

There are definitely other ways. Many of them less painful.

getting fired~a blessing in disguise

So, I recently ran into some friends I hadn’t seen for quite some time. It should be noted that we all used to work together at various restaurants throughout the airport. If you think I’m bitter about the service industry in general, I can honestly tell you, much of that bitterness came from the airport, but that’s a different story entirely. I will say if you think a ‘streetside’ restaurant sucks, you should spend some time at the airport and you’ll really learn what sucks.

There’s nothing like working in a union restaurant to suck the life out of you.

I often joked that it’s where servers go to die. Or their souls do anyway. Of course, the lifer’s argue that they stay for the health insurance benefits, but I argue that you’ll need to use them more often because of things such as depression, suicide attempts and everything in between. And there’s the possible homicide, but once again, that’s another story, for another time.

After catching up with my friends about our own lives, the subject turned to work, as it so often does in our country. I’m so sick of this conversation and it’s repetitiveness, I’m starting to feel homicidal. Anyway.

We swapped stories about others we knew and who had become the latest casualty of being fired, some of whom were ‘lucky’ to get their job back, thanks to union representation. Of course, I argued the fact that the lucky ones are actually those that were fired, perhaps even set free, but…I’m often alone in this argument.

Some of these people have been fired more than once and each time, are ‘happy’ to get their j.o.b.s back.

I have to tell you, if I was ever fired, I sure as hell wouldn’t want my j.o.b. back, nor would I fight for it. It’s actually quite sad, how many people do though. Thankfully and perhaps surprisingly, I left on my own terms. It seemed appropriate that my last day would be a Friday the 13th.

Of course, getting fired from the airport, or any j.o.b. really, is a blessing in disguise, as far as I’m concerned.

easy vs. hard

As I continue to promote entrepreneurship everywhere I can, I often encounter people that defend the position that self-employment is hard. As if being an employee is simple. Especially in the service industry.

Sure, it might seem easy to punch a time clock and do what you’re told, day after day, but…

Is that any way to live? What about personal and financial reward? What about the long-term? What about the assholes we encounter on a daily basis? What about the rules that are enforced that we have no say about and often don’t make any sense? What about taking charge of our lives? What about making decisions that are in our best interest?

What about freedom? Of how we spend our time? Who we spend it with? And what we spend it doing?

In the end, wouldn’t it seem that self-employment would be the easier choice of the two?

break free~a recap

I would like to recap the steps I feel are necessary to break free of the ‘golden handcuffs’. While it may not be necessary to do each one, it greatly increases your odds of staying out of the industry, once you leave.

Step one~believe in yourself and the fact that you can earn an income outside of the service industry, or any other j.o.b. for that matter. If you believe that the service industry provides you with the best income you will ever earn, you are correct, but you are also selling yourself short. I attended a seminar the other day and learned an interesting fact; for every time you tell yourself you can’t do something, you have to tell yourself 16 times that you CAN do that very same thing. Think about that the next time you tell yourself you’ll never earn better income than serving.

Step two~create passive income. While I’m in the process of doing this myself, I know it is the only way to truly achieve financial freedom. There are so many ways to create passive income, you just have to figure out which works best for you.

Step three~pursue your passion. Unfortunately, our society is under the impression that work is just something you do. That is just wrong. The average person spends 50 hours per week at their j.o.b., so it would make sense to do work you love. Sadly, that is rarely the case and most of our society is shutting down parts of who they are, just to ‘get through the day’. Surviving, but not thriving. And living fragmented lives as a result. Don’t add to that number by settling for less than you deserve.

Step four~form a mastermind group. Servers and bartenders spend so much time together, they become like family. No matter how dysfunctional it can be at times. Instead of getting together to bitch about the owner’s, managers or ‘guests’, why not get together to brainstorm an escape plan? Think of how much more positive this would be for yourself and your situation.

Step five~devise a plan. You won’t have everything figured out before you begin, because life happens, but you also won’t get very far without a plan. If nothing else, plan the first steps necessary and go from there. Once you take the first step, you will notice that things will start to fall into place for you and what a great feeling that will be.

Step six~take action. This is definitely one of the most important steps, if not THE most important. You can believe in yourself, surround yourself with positive people and make all the plans in the world, but none of them will matter if you don’t take action. Do something bold every day or take small steps. It doesn’t really matter, as long as you do something toward your goals.

break free~step six

The most important step, and often the most difficult, in breaking free of the ‘golden handcuffs’ is to TAKE ACTION! Everything affects everything, and each of these steps won’t work without the others, but nothing else matters if you don’t take action. No amount of planning, believing or surrounding yourself with successful, like-minded people will help you.

Sadly, I often hear excuses as to why people don’t take the action necessary to change their lives. In fact, I made my own for years.

It’s funny and sad that it’s so easy to think of excuses for failure rather than reasons to succeed.

Taking action can be intimidating when you don’t know where to start, but you can’t take a second step without taking a first. You can’t and won’t be able to plan for every possible scenario before you start because, sometimes things happen that no amount of planning can predict. That doesn’t mean that you don’t start, however. In fact, just the opposite. As you start to take action, things will line up or fall into place just how they were meant to.
